Bitcoin ETFs provide investors with direct exposure to the price of Bitcoin without the complexity of managing private keys, digital wallets, or cryptocurrency exchanges. Since the SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, these funds have attracted hundreds of billions in assets, making Bitcoin accessible through standard brokerage accounts alongside traditional stocks and bonds.
The largest spot Bitcoin ETFs include IBIT (iShares Bitcoin Trust), which quickly became one of the fastest-growing ETFs in history, FBTC (Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund), and GBTC (Grayscale Bitcoin Trust), which converted from a closed-end fund structure. These Bitcoin ETFs differ primarily in expense ratios and liquidity, with IBIT and FBTC offering some of the lowest fees in the category.
Bitcoin ETFs are best suited for investors who want cryptocurrency exposure within a tax-advantaged or traditional brokerage account. They eliminate custodial risk and simplify tax reporting compared to holding Bitcoin directly. However, these funds carry the same volatility as Bitcoin itself, and investors should size their positions accordingly. Many financial advisors suggest limiting Bitcoin exposure to a small percentage of a diversified portfolio.
