High Yield Bond ETFs

High-yield bond ETFs invest in corporate bonds rated below investment grade (BB or lower), commonly known as junk bonds. These bonds offer significantly higher interest rates than investment-grade or government bonds to compensate investors for the elevated risk of default. High-yield bond ETFs provide diversification across hundreds of issuers, reducing the impact of any single company defaulting on its debt.

The most prominent high-yield bond ETFs include HYG (iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF), the largest and most traded high-yield fund with extensive market coverage, JNK (SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF), which offers similar broad high-yield exposure with a slightly different index methodology, and USHY (iShares Broad USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF), which provides the broadest high-yield coverage with the lowest expense ratio in the category.

High-yield bond ETFs serve income-seeking investors who want significantly higher yields than investment-grade bonds while accepting greater credit risk. Junk bonds behave partly like equities, performing well during economic expansions when default rates are low and struggling during recessions when defaults rise. The diversification in these ETFs is critical, as individual junk bonds carry meaningful default risk. High-yield bonds have a lower correlation with Treasuries than investment-grade bonds, making them a distinct asset class. They are best used as a yield-enhancing complement to a core bond allocation rather than a standalone fixed-income holding.
